Bellow Stairs and Lift Rails

Lift In Action
Above:
ELEGANCE, Vulnerability, Femininity/Masculinity.
  • Texture Box: "Organic" represents the ambiguous masculinity of the statue.
  • The Stair: You are literally meant to bend to walk up/down these stairs. They are designed to make you feel fear and pain, NOT built for confront. "Brittle" enhances the sense of fragility.

Gallery:
  • Inflatable Structure: Natural form that looks like its part of landscape. Temporary; i.e. tent. Gallery should not detract attention from the studios.
  • Stair Structure: playing with the idea of stairs as bones in a museum. Functional as seating.

Bellow:

  • Texture Ramp: "Structure", inspired from the Tate Modern and the technique of pouring concrete into wooden moulds.
  • The Stairs: Draws the eye upwards and mimics the central column of the art work.

ELEGANCE
Design depicts the vulnerability, elegance and ambiguous masculinity in the Arch of Hysteria.

  • Spiral Feature: Sweeping lines represent femininity, i.e. drape of a woman's dress.
  • Wooden box: represents Masculinity and the break from the conventional idea of hysteria. Also vulnerability; hanging.
  • The Stairs: projected from box, alien, to represent patients and women's alienation from society.

TRACE:
Design mimics art work by Ai Weiwei.

  • Spiral Ramps: similar to how our eyes travel around the art work our feet must travel around the structure.
  • The Stairs: Multitude of lines and direction all leading upward.

PAIN:

  • Sphere: contraction of from into a spheric shape. As if the dome is retracting away from the glass structure in pain.
  • Glass Structure: Fragility and Fear (of breaking).
  • The Stairs: Bending around the basement structure like being forced to contort. Also, stairs should shake to cause fear.

"Arch of Hysteria, 1993
Stemming from her interest in the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of pain and fear, Bourgeois was drawn to the arch of hysteria as theorized and represented by the nineteenth-century neurologist Jean Martin Charcot (1825-1893). While working at the Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris, Charcot sought to represent hysteria by documenting the performances of his female patients. The physical tension of the hysterical arch - an intense muscular contraction, resulting in immobility and paralysis of the limbs - is emblematic of an equally extreme emotional state. Bourgeois makes this highly vulnerable position even more so by suspending her male figure from the ceiling. In choosing to represent him in an attitude traditionally associated with the female, the artist transgresses the social and sexual roles assigned to women, challenging the misconception of hysteria as a female malady."

INTRICACY:

  • The Doughnut: continuos, circular form. Detail added through submerged, oddly shaped spaces. Offers viewer a dynamic experience, like being in a cave.
  • The Stairs: two sets, circular and linear, drawing from forms from the artwork. Draws the eye upwards and makes us walk in a similar sense.
